You’re walking down a trail in the woods and you can’t help but feel at peace. Everything around you is so still, so serene, so perfect. The only movement, and the only sound, for that matter, is coming from the burbling creek and from you and your own breathing.
For the briefest moment, you forget everything about your life. Everything seems perfect. You feel like you could just be in the Garden of Eden.
(And here’s where this prompt takes a little bit of a turn… you don’t have to go down this track if you don’t want to.)
That’s when you suddenly remember everything, however. The world isn’t the idyllic place you let yourself think for that brief moment. you scold yourself for letting your mind slip because you knew that’s how people die.
Because the world ended. Or, more accurately, society has collapsed. You knew the world ending would be a whole lot worse than what you’re going though, but that didn’t make this any easier.
So, what kind of societal collapse occurred? Was there a revolution that ended in total worldwide anarchy? Did the EMPs fall? Did zombies arise? Did the people rebel and opt to return to some sort of feudal existence? Did the aliens invade?
Whatever happened, a prompt like this could make for a neat worldbuilding short story that could make for a great giveaway for readers. I mean, I know I’d be curious about what in the world is going on after reading something where the main character went through some snap back to reality like this!
This prompt is free to use, as always!
