The Home Isle: Weekly Prompt 45

Islands are awesome, we all know it.
Maybe we want to live on one, maybe there’s an island we’ve always wanted to go to. Maybe we’re on an island that we want to finally get off of.
Alas, this week’s prompt is for islands during war time, but you can write whatever island story you want.
This week’s prompt feeds off the fact that islands are naturally safer to live on in times of war because they’re hard to invade. One of the hardest things a military can do is conduct an invasion by sea.
Because of this, the US, UK, and even Taiwan and Japan have been able to benefit from this little quirk of war.
Additionally, they are able to separate themselves from the world and the fighting whenever they please. (i.e. Japan before the US sailed a steamer into their harbor and awoke the sleeping giant and took Japan out of their feudal ways that they chose to put themselves into.)
Now, this week’s prompt is to tell the tale of a person who lives on an island (or something island-like) that’s looking on at a war from a safe distance. Maybe they feel like the war will never touch them. Maybe they want their government to get involved to save one of the sides. Maybe they want in on the fight so they can profiteer. Maybe they want in the fight so they can see the world.
Perhaps your character lives in the middle of a nuclear wasteland and they’ve discovered a war many miles away far across the “oceans” of the wasteland. Maybe they live on a planet that is so insanely far away from civilization and they’re watching that civilization crumble into war.
The options are endless, so go on and start writing!
I’d love to see what you come up with on InklingsFiction, but you don’t have to post it there. This prompt is free to use however you please.
